Shenandoah University (SU) in collaboration with SU’s Esport Programs, SU’s Veterans, Military, and Families Center (VMFC) and the Warrior GMR Foundation hosted a 2-day esports event in honor of Veterans Day.
The two day event centers around the Warrior GMR Valorant Esports Cup which will be played on SU’s main campus, Active-duty Army, Navy, Space Force, Air Force and Coast Guard esport teams will challenge veterans’ teams as well as a team composed of teens that lost a military parent called Gold star Gamers.
The Warrior GMR Armed Forces Esports Championship is a primary pillar of the Warrior GMR Foundation, a 501(c)3 founded in 2021 whose mission is to promoting health, wellness, and community-ship through gaming. A tournament-style rivalry between the U.S. Armed Forces in a Championship Series where military and gaming enthusiasts compete for honor, glory, and the Warrior trophy.
The Warrior GMR Cup featured five teams representing various branches of the armed forces. The competition was held in conjunction with the annual Rugbytown Sevens rugby tournament at Infinity Park, an on-field competition that since its inception has also featured teams from the various military branches.
Hosted in coordination with the Warrior GMR Cup, the Brain Health Summit 2021 was a small conference focused on the future of mental health through gaming. Attendees recognized how to leverage gaming as a social-emotional platform that will help transition veterans and prevent suicide.
