We interview Derek Herrera, world famous speaker and probably the most humble and gracious person you'll ever meet. If you are following our "nuggets" that our guests drop, you'll need a notepad for this one. An absolute amazing interview that will have you replaying it again for sure.
He founded the Marine Raider Foundation #marineraiderfoundation Topics: Do you think being exposed to diverse experiences increases resilience? When something is permanent and then disappears, that can be very challenging. For him everything was with a team and after his accident he said, "well now I'm alone, but my team is still deployed for another 5 months. How can I do the most with what I have here?" That is when is started to gain massive motivation instead of turning on the victim attitude. Victim mentality: I felt fortunate to have this experience to know those in my team I met. I actually felt totally honored to have known them. I wanted to honor them with massive action, decisiveness, and to find problems that only I could solve. That is where I started building my businesses. But it's not all rainbows. Failures to me were just necessary learning moments. There’s always someone who has it worse for myself, a choice to do something amazing, two philosophies I live by: Maslow’s hierarchical needs use it to achieve new levels; a stoic mindset: what is in my control, what is out of my control;---you have to put yourself out there and fail to discover what is out of your control (if you are constantly taking it safe, you are not finding what is in your control); many people who do not push themselves will never discover what is in your control; be ok with failure; have a support system you can rely upon in difficult times; have a sense of purpose fulfillment he’s really motivated by the impact of what he does. He's met the President and other influential people and he sees them all the same, doesn't matter how popular or important someone is, to him they are all people. This allows him to be authentic, not get out of his value system, and relate to whomever he speaks to. Other hosts: The things #joerogan and #jocko do well are that they are #genuine and don't do it for followers or views. They do it because they have an honest interest in the guest. He was a past #jockopodcast #jockowillink guest and will only do shows that meet this criteria. People are flawed, interesting, authentic, that’s why we tune in. Be proud of your flaws and work them to your advantage.
